The ANZMapS Committee invites you to submit an abstract to present at our one-day symposium,
held at the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney, on 1 May 2024.The symposium precedes a
public lecture and workshop on 2–3 May 2024, organised by the University of Western Australia,
exploring the history and legacies of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the Indian Ocean
World. Drawing on this theme, the symposium examines the cartography of the Indian Ocean World
and its role in shaping human knowledge, culture, and history from antiquity to the present.
Since ancient times, this vast expanse of water has been a crucial space for trade, migration, cultural
exchange, and knowledge transfer. The Indian Ocean remains central to global climate, biodiversity,
trade, and human history. Mapping the Indian Ocean has been key to understanding these dynamics,
and we welcome papers exploring any aspect of its cartography. This symposium offers an excellent
opportunity to connect with colleagues in cartography, surveying, and related fields where mapping
has played an essential role.
