Countdown to Southern Frontiers: Mapping Myths and Realities
With five months to go, here’s a sneak preview at what’s in store when Southern Frontiers opens at MONA this October.
A Two-Day Program of Talks, Tours, and Exchange
Running across Friday 17 and Saturday 18 October 2025, the conference will feature:
- A keynote presentation by Rüdiger Mack
 - A varied program of papers
 - A distinctive venue that inspires reflection and discussion
 - A welcome reception to meet fellow attendees
 - An optional conference dinner for those who wish to continue the conversation informally

Presentations will take place in MONA’s Ether building, with time set aside for informal discussion, networking, and exploring the museum’s exhibitions.
A Distinctive Setting
Southern Frontiers at MONA offers more than just a change of venue—it invites a shift in perspective. Set on the River Derwent, MONA’s architecture and exhibitions offer an ideal environment for reflecting on how maps have shaped, distorted, and defined conceptions of the southern world.
