Annual conference – Encircled by sea: mapping the coastal communities of Australia and New Zealand

The 44th annual conference of the Australian and New Zealand Map Society will be held in Wollongong, New South Wales, September 7 – 9, 2016.
Encircled by sea, Australia and New Zealand share a common history of exploration and settlement along the coastal fringes. The 2016 conference will explore the European discovery and gradual mapping and settlement of Australia and New Zealand and the significant role explorers, surveyors and cartographers have played in shaping and documenting the changing coastal landscape over more than 200 years. The conference program also acknowledges the 400th anniversary of the landing of Dirk Hartog in his vessel the Eendracht off the coast of Shark Bay, on 25 October 1616.
The conference will be held at Wollongong, the administrative centre for the Illawarra region, an area which reflects the common history of many coastal cities and towns in Australia and New Zealand. The first documented European sighting of the Illawarra coastline was in 1770 with an attempted landing by Cook’s crew near Woonona on the 28th of April as the Endeavour sailed north along the Eastern coast of Australia. Emerging from a proud history of steel making and coal mining industries, Wollongong is today also an important knowledge services centre, international trade hub and a leading university city.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Chet Van Duzer is an independent scholar focusing on the history of cartography. He has worked with a number of significant map collections including those in the Library of Congress, the British Library and the John Carter Brown Library and is a board member of the Lazarus Project at the University of Mississippi. Chet will discuss ‘The World for a King: Pierre Desceliers’ Map of 1550’ and its relationship to the discovery of Australia.
John Robson is the Map Librarian at the University of Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand. He is a member of the Captain Cook Society and the NZ representative for the Hakluyt Society. In 2009 he published Captain Cook’s War and Peace about Cook’s earlyRoyal Navy career. John will discuss James Cook’s use of running surveys, which were used to great effect in the south-west Pacific producing the charts of New Zealand (first voyage) and Vanuatu–New Hebrides (second voyage).
Dr Wendy van Duivenvoorde is a senior lecturer in maritime archaeology at Flinders University and deputy director of the Australian Consortium of Humanities Research Centres. She is also affiliated faculty with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology at Texas A&M University. Dr van Duivenvoorde’s research primarily focuses on ships of exploration and Indiamen, and includes the archaeological remains of Western Australia’s Dutch East Indiamen shipwrecks.

Field Trip Friday 9 September
As part of our conference program we will be including a Field trip on the Friday. Costs for the day are included in the full registration fee. Lunch will be provided. This activity will commence at 9.30, meeting at the conference venue. Approximate schedule includes:
10.00 Science Centre & Planetarium – Cosmic Journey presentation
Take a tour of the cosmos with Astrophysicist Dr Stacey Palen. Cosmic Journey begins here on Earth and then shifts to the most distant reaches of the universe. The show features images from NASA’s observatories and the Hubble Space Telescope and the Spiter Space Telescope. Cosmic Journey was created by the Ott Planetarium at Weber State University.

The Dorothy Prescott Prize
This prize will be awarded to the author presenting the best conference paper, as judged by a panel appointed by the ANZMapS President. Dorothy Prescott (OAM) is an Honorary Fellow at the Department of Resource Management and Geography, University of Melbourne, and received the Order of Australia in June 2003 for services to map librarianship and cartobibliography.
